In the southern city Puerto Natales, in Última Esperanza province, a “Social Coordinator Patagonia Without Salmon Farms” was created last weekend. They demand a moratorium to the installation of new cages of this controversial extractive industry. According to Ecoceanos News, the initiative is integrated by local businessmen, fishermen, tourism workers, students and citizen organizations from Puerto Natales. The installation of salmon industries, most of them transnational corporations, in that region of the country is having impacts on the local economy, which is based on tourism and craft fisheries.
